Serving on a Nonprofit Board
This training is for community members interested in serving on a nonprofit board.  Attendees will learn about the five main responsibilities of board membership and how to find a board match with a nonprofit that could really use your expertise.  Develop your leadership skills and offer a valued community service through BoardConnect.

Building Your Board
"Building Your Board" training covers important aspects of recruiting new members for a nonprofit's board of directors including recruitment planning, identifying and cultivating candidates, and electing new members.  You'll also learn about matching services that connect candidates and nonprofits.

Volunteer Management Training (VMT)
The VMT series is designed with the busy professional in mind.  Workshops are offered in either half-day or lunch-hour sessions and are held at the Greater Kalamazoo United Way Building at 709 S Westnedge Ave, Kalamazoo.

Half-Day Sessions:
Volunteer Program Planning & Writing Effective Volunteer Job Descriptions
A comprehensive review of how to assess your program, identify its strengths and weaknesses, and then define appropriate volunteer roles.  Learn what to include in volunteer handbooks, and how to address legal issues and policies.  Attendees will learn how to write effective job descriptions that validate the need for volunteers and provide clear direction for all.

Marketing, Recruitment, Orientation and Training
Learn how to create and use a recruitment plan to target volunteers with a passion for your mission.  Attendees will hear tips on how to screen applicants in the interview process and learn how to create a solid orientation and training that may result in increased retention.

Supervision, Evaluation & Recognition
Build your skills through a review of risk management, reporting relationships, evaluation, placement assessment, record keeping, and termination.  We'll also review recognition techniques and discuss the importance of having board and staff involved in supporting your volunteer program.

Risk Management in Volunteer Programs
Risk management is not only about purchasing insurance or avoiding lawsuits; it is about protecting and conserving all of your organization' resources (people and money), thus freeing it to pursue its important mission.  Learn about the importance of adhering to policies and procedures for managing risk in a volunteer program.  Workshops include tips for controlling/alleviating/diminishing risk through effective volunteer position design, screening, training, and supervision.

Building Effective Teen Programs
Learn how to adapt best practices of volunteer management to meet the unique needs of teen volunteers.  Topics include: benefits & barriers to teen volunteering, recruiting teens, orientation, training, and supervision, plus recognition and satisfaction surveys.  This provides an opportunity for you to look at your current program and evaluate where improvements are needed. 

Handling Volunteer Performance Problems
This session includes a review of why it is critical to deal with performance gaps in a timely and effective manner.  We will describe the range and types of frequent volunteer performance problems, confront and explore appropriate solutions for volunteer performance problems, and review some techniques to use in dismissing a volunteer.

$40 per session - reflects $5 discount  for online registration
$25 per session for Nonprofit Alliance Members (membership will be verified)

Volunteer Management Training
 
Half-day sessions are $40 each or three for $100
Lunch-hour sessions are $20 each

All Classes are subject to change or cancellation.

Cancellation policy:
A three (3) day notice is required for all cancellations.  The registration fee minus a $10 processing fee will be returned to any registrant who provides the required notice.  Registrations are transferable with advanced notice.
