What is the Student Athlete Summer Volunteer Program?
The Student Athlete Summer Volunteer Project (SASVP) encourages student athletes from the Kalamazoo Valley Athletic Association to participate in summer volunteer service to their community. Student Athlete Volunteers identify needs within their local community and at area nonprofit organizations, and then volunteer to provide help in meeting those needs. Through experiential learning participants gain understanding about the work and impact of nonprofit organizations, and gain valuable workplace experience as well as life skills. The project's activities complement the team building experience of sports with character building lessons learned through volunteering. Additionally, the school team that volunteers the most hours will be awarded a $2,000 grant for their school's athletic department or football programs. (As each team does not have the same number of players, the winner will be determined by dividing the total hours by the number of students on the team roster.)
How does it work?
Participating student athletes from each school identify and participate in volunteer activities that fill a community need, and are under the direction of a nonprofit organization, government program, community group or school. If there is a question as to whether a volunteer project would be approved simply call the Volunteer Center at 269-382-8350 or email us at amaccreery@volunteerkalamazoo.org. (Most Kalamazoo County schools will accept verified summer volunteer service hours from this program for other school requirements, like Honor Society programs, Michigan Student Service Award, etc.)
Volunteer hours worked between the dates of June 15 and August 15, 2010 are eligible for inclusion in report totals. Hours will be tabulated by the Volunteer Center of Greater Kalamazoo and winners will be notified at a recognition program on August 28, 2010. Location to be announced.
The Volunteer Center of Greater Kalamazoo will help students find volunteer opportunities and will keep a record of their service throughout their participation with the program. Upon completion of a volunteer activity, students record their volunteer hours on a Student Athlete Summer Volunteer Activity Report. Students must record the date they volunteered, the number of hours and the activities they performed as a volunteer, and have an authorized site Volunteer Coordinator sign the form. Multiple volunteer work locations may be listed on a single form. When the form is full, return it to the Volunteer Center by fax at 269-382-8362, by mail to Volunteer Center of Greater Kalamazoo, 709-A S Westnedge Ave, Kalamazoo, MI 49007, or scan and send the document by email to amaccreery@volunteerkalamazoo.org.
Coaches are encouraged to provide transportation for their athletes and to use the volunteer time as an opportunity to encourage team-building experiences. Up to two coaches per team will be allowed to report volunteer hours worked with their team athletes. Service hours will be reported along with their athletes.
